5dolls on their concept and unused names

The K-pop industry experienced a wave of girl groups with doll-like faces and princess-like appearances, but 5dolls stepped away from that traditional routine with a secret weapon: Power.

Members Soo Mi (22), Chan Mi (19), Hye Won (16), Hyo Young (18), and maknae Eun Gyo (16) made their debut in February with the digital single “Lip Stain”. Soon after, they released their first mini-album “Charming Five Girls” and kicked off their activities with “It’s You”. Instead of wearing 10cm high heels like other girl groups, 5dolls showed off their cute and powerful image while wearing comfortable sneakers and training pants.

Leader Soo Mi stated, “I was sort of shocked when I saw the outfits. It was a bit more casual when compared to the other outfits that the other groups usually wear. Back then, I was concerned if we will be able to perform wearing this. Also, instead of worrying about dancing in high heels, I think its a plus that we are wearing sneakers because we able to focus more on our singing and dancing.” ”

To these five girls, there is role model that they look up to; that girl group is 2NE1. Hyo Young stated, “I want to learn how to be like them. They enjoy the time they have on stage singing. They know how to control the stage. They also fill up the stage with just four members. Compared to them, we are very lacking. If we rate ourselves, I would give ourselves 65 points?”

5dolls is part of the 11-member group, Co-Ed School. Before Co-Ed School wrapped up their promotions, they were pulled into a controversy involving member Hot Blood Kangho, as pictures of him at bars surfaced on the web. While that may not be unusual, Hot Blood Kangho was an underage student at the time, and so the pictures shocked fans and netizens alike.

Reflecting over this time, Soo Mi stated, “Since there were pictures of proof, we could not back out on that. He realized his mistakes and is still reflecting on them. Since our job is based on our images, it is important to be careful of what we do. We will work harder so that this mistakes will never happen again.”

The members also stated, “Sometimes there are harsh comments that have groundless rumors. However, we believe that these are because they have interest in us. Whether the comments are in favor or against us, we are happy that there are comments about us. Truthfully, it’s scarier to have no comments at all. It’s better to have harsh comments about us. We look through the comments and take into account what will help us in our next performances.”

Despite being cool about the harsh comments, the members stated that they are a little disappointed when the netizens do no call them by their correct names. Some netizens call the members by the interests that they gained before their debut. For example, they called the members ‘Soo Mi who filled up See Ya’s Nam Gyu Ri’s empty spot,’ ‘Chan Mi who was a trainee at SM Entertainment before her debut as Co-Ed School,’ ‘Hye Won who looks like Kara’s Goo Hara,’ and ‘Eun Gyo who looks good in a red hairstyle.’

They revealed their disappointed feelings, “People around us do not call us ‘See Ya’s ex-member,’ ‘little Goo Hara,’ ‘SM trainee,’ ‘red hair’, and so on. We all have names…Perhaps they do not think we are a new group because we all have different backgrounds.”

Despite their disappointments, 5dolls hold high expectations for 2011. Because they could not receive the rookie awards for Co-Ed School, the girls are determined to win the rookie awards this year.

5dolls are both thankful and sad about their joint performance with T-ara

The members of 5dolls have expressed both gratitude and sadness about their collaborative stage with T-ara. They shared their feelings during a recent interview with Joy News 24.

5dolls linked up with T-ara for a special joint performance of “I Mean You” last week, which garnered much attention. This performance caught particular interest because 5dolls was constantly being compared to their labelmate seniors, T-ara.

5dolls stated,

“Honestly, T-ara are our rivals. They give us a lot of advice about what to do on stage in order to come out pretty, and what gestures to do. This joint performance was done because the T-ara seniors supported us by suggesting, ‘How ’bout we do a special stage?’.“

They continued,

“‘I Mean You’ is our song and since we are rookies, we have a lot of greed, but because T-ara shared the stage with us, there was a good response. We are thankful. But we are also sad because we feel as if we lost the chance to stand on our own. It is our debut song, and we needed to show our own individuality. To be honest, we do have an upset heart; we think we need to let our name be known to the public more.

We also wonder what it would be like if we joined T-ara for their performance. We hope that when T-ara releases another album, we’ll be able to return the favor.”

We think awareness about us has risen, but looking at the music charts, we fell short of expectations. We need more effort.

This year’s goal is the rookie award. Since we didn’t win the rookie award with Co-Ed, we think that if we win the rookie award as a girl group, it will be a new feeling. We will work hard to achieve good results.”

5dolls aim to rival and surpass T-ara

Co-Ed’s girl group unit 5dolls revealed their ambitions for their future in the music industry.

The five-member group revealed the dance song “I Mean You” in the middle of February, and made their debut with the release of their mini album, which they are currently in midst of promoting.

You could say that 5dolls aren’t necessarily rookies though, as Soo Mi, Chan Mi, Hyo Young, Hye Won made their debut under the 10-member group Co-Ed last year, and Soo Mi was a former member of the 3-member female vocal group SeeYa in 2009.

However, the determination 5dolls possesses is even more rookie-like than other rookies, and the reason is that they didn’t necessarily live up to the expectations they were given by the public when they had made their debut under Co-Ed. They were even victimized by malicious rumors, but that only drove 5dolls to try harder.

“We thought of it as if we do well now, we can do well with Co-Ed also. We were sure of our confidence. Prior to our debut, we practiced our singing and dancing a lot. Also, since we’re a girl group, we can show a more cute and feminine image, something you couldn’t see in Co-Ed”, said Chan Mi about their potential.

Having the popular girl group T-ara under Core Contents Media with them have been a good stimulant for 5dolls.

Soo Mi said, “The older and younger girls of our seniors T-ara give us lots of advice” and “Our seniors T-ara is a team that provokes us well, and one day we want to be an amazing girl group that can surpass them at least once.”

There’s a lot more to rivaling T-ara though, as Hyo Young’s younger twin sister Hwa Young is in the group.

Hyo Young said, “I want to rival my younger sister Hwa Young” and “We’re both rappers of our respective teams, so there’s more rivalry between us.”

The members of 5dolls also had their respective new beginnings with the group, adding onto the reasons of why their debut album is even more endearing to them.

Hye Won said, “Chan Mi graduated high school with Eun Kyo, and I graduated middle school” and “As we take new beginnings, we are promoting ‘I Mean You’ with a joyful heart”.

Eun Kyo, who is newly added to the group and is known for her dancing skills, said, “I’m happy to attend An Yang Arts High School with Hye Won” and “I’m doing my best in enjoying the stage with this set of mind.”

Finally, 5dolls revealed that they would like to receive a rookie award in the female group category, and even strive to win first on a music program.

5dolls hopes to participate in “Idol Star Athletics & Swimming Championships” this Chuseok

Co-Ed’s Chanmi recently revealed her desire to participate in MBC’s “Idol Star Athletics & Swimming Championships“.

During their interview with Newsen, the Co-Ed idol was asked if she was partial to appearing on variety programs. Chanmi replied, “I wanted to participate in MBC’s program, but the timing was off; Co-Ed had concluded promotions at the time and it was before 5dolls’ official debut. Even if I wanted to do it on my own, 5dolls was still forming during this time, and maknae Eun Gyo had just joined, so it was difficult to fit in a solo schedule.”

When told that it would be held again this Chuseok, the 5dolls members exclaimed, “We really want to participate this time!” Soomi continued, “Chanmi is really great at everything, she’s a hard worker. She’s great at track and maintains her speed even for longer distances. I think she’s got a talent for variety shows.”

Chanmi replied, “SISTAR’s Bora is really good too. We need to practice!”

When asked about her feelings on almost being able to debut with SNSD, Chanmi explained, “I was a trainee for a long time. I had participated in the recording for SNSD’s title track, and even completed the photoshoot. Since I was young, I was upset at not being able to debut with them.”

She continued, “However, I was understanding because I knew that it hadn’t been that long since I started training. I supported the SNSD unnis and hoped for the best.”

The girls concluded the interview with an introduction of their sub-unit group, stating, “We’ll be able to show different sides to us that we weren’t able to show through Co-Ed. We promise to work hard in order to improve as both rookies and as singers.”

Meanwhile, T-ara’s Eunjung, Hyomin and Jiyeon will join 5dolls for promotions on all music shows this week, so stay tuned!
